Pain

Sorry my words are sad
The pain is all I know
Seems sadness always resides
Where happiness comes and goes

I saw it at the cross
And I’ve seen it in your eyes
It’s quiver in your voice
And through your muffled cries

Yes, sadness is always there
It’s been there from the start
Your sadness is always there
Alive and well in my heart

I can always feel you with me
Distant but always here
Your touch is fresh upon me
Faint but always near

For pain it has no fear
It’s sadness with nothing to gain
nothing to buy or trade for
Bitter and free as shame

So lift up your voice to heaven
Sing the saddest song
then return a song from heaven
And tell me it won’t last long

'Cuz sadness always resides
Where happiness comes and goes
And pain’s my life’s remainder
It’s the truest thing I’ve known.
