Collaborative Learning Groups (September 2003)
Where will the journey take you? What relationships
would help provide challenge and encouragement to
share life and faith? Who would you look to as a
traveling companion? Do you find yourself helping
guide a group of Jesus followers into a life of
service and ministry? Are you looking for ways to
develop healthy community? ETREK Learning Groups may
just be the compliment to your Oozey journey!
Leading and Emerging Culture -
Consider exploring leading and
culture with the founder of TheOoze.com and Soularize.
The upcoming release of
Spencer Burke’s
book
Making Sense of
Church will be both a
bridge and a boon to the ongoing conversations among
those already well on their way to exploring the
emerging culture and ministry. Those looking to help
connect the rich heritage of the traditional church to
the transitions it faces will find the power of
metaphor energizing. Guest faculty for the journey
include Frederica Matthewes-Green, Dan Kimball, Andrew
Jones, Sally Morgenthaler, Bill Easum, Todd Hunter,
Tom & Christine Sines, Leonard Sweet, Brian McLaren -
plus 1 other..
Organic Church Planting -
Maybe you are looking for someone
to journey with planting a new church. Many obvious
issues occupy much of our energy. What about those
unseen obstacles? Need encouragement and a place to
wrestle with the move of God, why not join
Jason Evans,
as he explores Organic Church Planting. Director of
Seed Stories and currently part of a leading team and
planting a family of house churches called, Matthew's
House in San Diego, Jason has consulted and trained
hundreds of new churches and church plants on what it
means to be the church in the 21st Century. Jason is a
DCPI Associate (Dynamic Church Planting Int.) and a
presenter for Church Multiplication Training Center.
He is a requested speaker on current thoughts on
church planting and emerging ministry opportunities..
Guest faculty include: Sunil Sardar, Todd Hunter,
Stuart Murray-Williams, Jim Henderson, Brian McLaren
and five others.
Youth Ministry Transitions -
Could be you work with young
people and realize the transitions necessary to move
youth ministry from event to real life. Take the
journey with Rodney
Huffty. Making some transitions of his own,
Rodney found participation in the ETREK pilot group
both encouraging and challenging – sending him on an
odyssey of his own. What better way to work through
the transitions of youth ministry than with someone
who knows first hand the implications involved in
letting go? Guest faculty include: Brian McLaren, Mark
Riddle and eight others.
Building Healthy Community -
Some consider “community” a
buzzword. Take the journey with
Joe Myers,
founder of
www.languageofbelonging.com and contributor to the
“Preaching Studio” on Len Sweet’s
www.PreachingPlus.com. Healthy community will be
more than a simple catch phrase. The release of Joe's
book
Search to Belong,
in September, will rock the small group world with
cutting edge applications of the four spaces of
belonging to ministry in a variety of settings. Let
Joe lead you on an incredible journey along with these
guest faculty: Rod Huron, Brian McLaren, Randy Frazee,
Len Sweet, Todd Hunter, Jim Henderson, Scott Ginsberg
and three others.
Native American Spirituality -
The need to connect leadership
with the rich traditions of an incredible culture give
us the privilege to present
Ray Levesque
of
www.1000tipis.com. He will guide would-be
travelers to consider Native American Leadership. The
kick-off should be a fascinating experience. Your
context may be multi-cultural, wouldn’t you find it
valuable to understand the richness of Native American
culture as it relates to the journey of faith? Come go
with Ray and these guest faculty: Richard Twiss,
Father Patrick J. Twohy, Randy Woodley, Terry LeBlanc,
John GrosVenor, Robert Francis, Matthew Coon Come,
Vincent Yellow Old Woman, Lynda Prince, and Jeff
Yellow Owl.
Impacting Culture Through the Arts and Film -
The rage in many quarters is how to
integrate the power of film with the expressions of
faith. You’re the creative type or want to be. You
long to find ways to express faith in film or
integrate the arts in the life of your community of
faith. Join producer
Jack Hafer,
http://www.argyllfilms.com. The journey will
include a wide variety of guest faculty: James
Calhoun, Ron Austin, Mako Fujimura, Monty Kelso,
Dwayne Cogdill, Mitch Teemley, Brad Coleman, Art
Greco, Gene Edward Veith and Dr. Stan Mattson.
FaithSharing/Evangelisim -
In a recent article, Kevin
Miller, Vice-President of Christianity Today,
expresses the great value of the ministry of
Jim Henderson
and
www.off-the-map.org.
Today many wrestle with evangelism and its forms. Who
better qualified to lead the journey that the
originator of “Interview with two lost guys” and other
eye-opening, heart wrenching windows into the hearts
of those we long to invite on the journey of faith.
Take the journey exploring faith sharing with Jim and
these guest faculty: Steve Sjogren, Doug Murren, Brian
McLaren, Len Sweet, Marti Clark, Rose Swetman, John
Sanders, Mark Mittleberg, George Hunter and Ken and
Deb Lloyd.
Communications/StoryTelling -
Some suggest methods of
communication need to be radically altered in order to
connect with the emerging culture. Wrestling with
questions surrounding the validity of the
metanarrative, join
Mike Deviries
as he moves along the journey exploring
“communication/story telling.” Guest faculty will
include: Brian McLaren, Rob Bell and others.
Can’t choose just one? Begin this September and
continue moving in and out of groups in the years to
come. What if I am torn between several? No worry,
make plans to make ETREK Learning Journeys your place
to continue the conversation and ready yourself for
the adventures that lie ahead for followers of God in
the way of Christ. Many of these outstanding journeys
will be available in January along with the potential
of an additional 8 learning experiences. If you are
pursuing formal education, why not make ETREK one or
more of your experiential courses. Graduate credit is
available through The Assembly of God Theological
Seminary and Dr. Earl Creps (Stories of Emergence).
FAQ's
What Are ETREK Collaborative
Learning Groups:
Peer-to-peer learning groups of approximately 14
learners and a facilitator. These unique learning
groups meet face-to-face at the beginning and end of
the 6-month series to meet each other, develop the

intervening months, the group members participate in
facilitated group phone conferences with experts or
authors in the agreed upon subjects. Peer-to-peer
phone conferences are used to further explore the
topics being discussed. Private learning sessions
one-on-one with the facilitator for personal
application. For each subject there will be a reading
