The Big Kahuna
I knew there was a reason I subscribe to
HBO. In this instance, it was the chance to see The Big Kahuna, a movie
produced by Kevin Spacey, and starring Danny Devito, Kevin Spacey and
Peter Facinelli. Director John Swanbeck's directorial debut weaves a
story that discusses the issues of God, truth, honesty, life, death and
friendship in the context of three businessmen attending a midwest
convention with hopes of landing a big account. It also has a lot to say
about 'evangelism' and marketing. Check out a
review at
Hollywood Jesus. Or
purchase the DVD and show it at your next pastor's meeting. It
should get some interesting discussion going.

Ouch, 10 reasons why your church is, ahem, less than desirable
I like to check out the sites that refer to
Next-Wave each week. There are several hundred, including a number of
blogs. While I was checking out
Richard Bott's musings,
he mentioned an article by John O'Keefe at ginkworld,
10 reasons why your church sucks. Be careful, if you are a pastor,
it might cause you pain to read it.

Ripples and waves
David Hopkins is back online and
blogging.
Back from his honeymoon, and adjusting to marriage, etc. David sounds a
little burned out by ministry, with lots to write about. I met with a
friend of mine today, Hunter Chapman. Hunter is a young man who came to
the Skateboard ministry at the Ranch as a direct answer to the prayer,
"God send us a twenty-something skater to help." Since that time about 4
years ago he has graduated from college and has been developing and
running after-school skateboard programs in a Riverside school district.
His preparation days are just about complete and more ministry is on the
way. The skateboard
ministry was God's idea of how to mess with a bunch of burnt out
baby boomer Christians. And the ripples and waves continue....

Cultivating a Life for God
Had a chance to meet with Neil Cole,
church planter, author, and movement builder. You can check out his
story at the Church
Multiplication Associates site. He's the author of
Cultivating
a Life for God. He gave me a copy which I read over the Memorial
Day Weekend. It's a great book on spiritual formation, authenticity, and
discipleship. It made me realize my shortcomings. I
impacted in the same
way when I read Dallas Willard's Divine Conspiracy. I'm still
searching for the Holy Grail, the truly authentic "Christian" life.

The Search for "Authentic
Community"
Authentic community is what the
postmodern culture needs, wants, desires, we keep saying to one another.
I wonder how many of us have ever experienced it. Went to see Hugh
Grant's latest movie, About a Boy
yesterday. A good primer on the cultural need for community. The boy,
Marcus, lives with his suicidal single mom. He becomes acquainted with
Grant's character, Will, who lives an island-existence (as in No Man is
an Island) pursuing women but running away from intimacy. Their paths
coincide when Will attends a Single Parents Alone Together meeting
attempting to pick up single mom's with his fictional son, Ned. Marcus
gets the idea that with his crying-in-the-morning mum and he alone in
the world, that they need "back-up." So he invades Will's life and space
with unexpected results, both "boys" finding authentic community. The
lack of game playing between Will and Marcus is the foundation of their
relationship. Someday I'll get a good picture of "authentic community"
and I'll understand what it looks like when I see it.

David Hopkins
David Hopkins is getting married to Melissa Cassidy tomorrow so you can
imagine how busy his life has been lately. That's why Next-Wave has a
double issue for May-June. David is a Next-Wave "discovery". He began
writing for us in Apr 99 with his first article,
Superman is dead,
no more "here-for-hire" clergy. Sep 01 he became our third editor.
Melissa's photos were used to illustrate his
article on Christian tatooing.
Best wishes to David and
Melissa on their special
day. And thanks David for the great contribution you are making to the
dialogue concerning the church and culture. His latest article is
here.
