good stuff here. This past week, I had the opportunity to go to the USopen here in Tulsa. Though I've only played golf twice in the last 15 yrs I decided to go. Here's a couple things I noticed that might relate. 1. There are two worlds at a golf championship. The worlds are divided by a complex series of ropes. The players on one side. The rest of us on the other. The two NEVER cross. 2. People are created to worship. The USopen is a worship event. Tiger Woods is the greatest object of worship on the tour. (even when he's playing poorly) 3. People think they know Tiger. Because of the pervasiveness of his image in their life, they feel that Tiger is like them. Though he is a COMPLETE and ABSOLUTE stranger they don't think so. 4. People talk about Tiger constantly. Rumors are prevelant. What house he's rented in Tulsa this week.. How much he paid for the house... Where he's eating and with who? etc. Tiger smiles people discuss what he finds funny.
5. Technology is not neutral. TV is not reality and TV actually moves us further from reality. While standing in a prime spot on the 5th hole green watching various golfers play through Tiger hit his approach shot. I was amazed at how my perfect view of his shot from a bunker was interupted as dozens of cameramen and media moved into place to get the perfect shot of Tiger. There I was watching the a real life human being play golf "live and in person" But those who were there didn't even get to see him make his shots. NBC viewers did though. enjoyed the article.
