Beloved,
I think these two statements hit the nail on the head!
From Mark: "Technology is not neutral. TV is not reality and TV actually moves us further from reality."
From Randy: "I've been to several churches where the presentation completely obscured my view of God."
We should not reject all technology. But we should be mindful that the medium carries its own message. At the moment, I do not believe the new media of video and internet obscures our Gospel message. However, I don't think we carefully examine what takes place when we video tape something, pre-record it, or post it on the internet. SOMETHING is being compromised. Relationally, we need to fill a gap.
The Church should use the Internet to promote more person to person contact, not less. Video taping something should not be used just because we can. In my opinion, live theater is a better alternative. And we should NEVER use models for our church marketing campaigns. The people shown on our websites should be the people who ACTUALLY are a part of that community. To do otherwise is deceptive and it cheapens community image.
What do you think? Am I taking the "medium is the message" thing too far? I'd be interested in your opinion.
Blessings, David
