Brian,

It has been my experience that both instrumentalist and vocalist need to have a heart that is seeking God; if they have not embraced the faith I wonder how effectively they can lead me to the Throne of Grace. For example, we had a very talented drummer in our praise band who was a Christian, but his walk was weak and his heart was not thriving for personal worship. Over time, it became clear that he was "in it for the music" and the popularity.

"Take care! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired, because then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven." Matt. 6:1 NLT

I believe God will achieve His purpose even when we as leaders are out-of-alignment. But it has also been my experience that when that happens, I usually end up on my knees on the Royal Carpet.
