David, I fully agree with your thought that our fascination with the horrible is rooted in our awe for life. I recall you and I discussing the necessity to grieve death due to our realization that death, although natural in this fallen world, is unnatural in the spiritual realities. God is Life. Because we know this, however subconsciously, we grieve when a loved one dies. Even when an unknown other dies. However, our grief is temporary. "Blessed are they who mourn," is true. To mourn puts us back in touch with the fact that we exist within a sinful nature and the consequences thereof. Yet, our mourning leads to joy, just as the Law leads us to seek righteousness, and our faith leads us to freedom. When we mourn, we are confessing that we are flawed by our frail, sinful realities. But, we also are naturally guided to God and His grace as a source of comfort, victory and, eventually, reconciliation.
