Fluid In Motion
A Profile of Waves Church (continued
3/7)
Waves?
Behind this unique church name is some well-thought out ministry
philosophies and metaphors. Jeff says that one of the philosophies of Waves
"is that we want to be like waves hitting the shore, where we penetrate
in between the pebbles of our city’s subcultures; we want to be so
flexible and fluid that we can do that." Another analogy for the name
originated from the late martial artist guru, Bruce
Lee. "He said his kung fu was like water. If you put it in a
bowl, it takes the shape of a bowl; if you put it in a glass, it takes the
shape of a glass. We want the essence of the gospel which is living water,
to be like Bruce Lee’s kung fu in that it takes the shape of the culture
and sub-cultures." So ever since, the water analogies continue to
appear in their ministry plans as in "God created the waves, Jesus, the
Living Water moves the waves and the Holy Spirit energizes the waves; web
site headings like ‘RadioWaves’ that display worship songs written by
Jeff; and Sunday services called ‘TsunamiSunday.’
Bubble Tea House?

year, Jeff says the team prayed for a creative solution to their
building quandary. As a church plant, they couldn’t afford to own a
building, and renting a venue was too costly. One day, they thought of
renting a Bubble Tea House for their TsunamiSunday services,
and prayerfully, they chose one location called Yummy Tea House
where each week they pay for CDN$175 worth of food and drinks, and get a
hip and comfortable place for worship without having to pay rent. |

Dann says the Waves vision is to plant more churches like this.
"This is the first of many, we pray, by God’s grace. This is the
pilot project. If we have churches in all Bubble Tea houses, then praise
God!"

Maria Rivera is a friend of one of the members.
Of the Bubble Tea venue she says it’s "really cool and a nice
environment. I think my friends would be more inclined to give it a try
because it’s less intimidating and more welcoming. I’m at Bubble tea
houses all the time." John stresses that they "want [church] to be
on their turf, where it’s very natural for them. So if they’re not from
church backgrounds, it’s not threatening." But adds, "Yes, we
want to be innovative, but not for the sake of innovation." Tim Cheng,
a college student, agrees with John on the importance of playing on their
turf, and believes that often people have "preconceived notions about the church." Many, he says, may even feel uncomfortable
in a church building. They may feel more comfortable because Waves is not in
a church building.
