Worship

During a Waves worship time, expect to hear an eclectic mix of old hymns, contemporary worship songs and songs written by Jeff that are tailored for the people of Waves. His songs reflect the biblical spirituality in relation to Asian-Canadian cultural experiences.

Some of the Filipinos come from Catholic backgrounds, and in one song, based on Exodus 20:3 (1 of the 10 Commandments), called ‘No One Better’ it says that "there is no one better we can pray to... not saints." Jeff stated "Some of our friends deal with psychics and so I’ve written, ’There’s no one better we can rely on... not psychics, not superstitions, or feng shui.’" And for Chinese and Japanese, Jeff included these lyrics: "Not...ancestors or deities." As a worship leader, he looks for songs that deal with these issues that remain largely untouched by contemporary worship songs. Jeff’s music is trans-generational: "Just this afternoon, a gentleman in his 40's told me that he felt God spoke to him through that song ‘No One Better’ even though it’s very contemporary."

Incorporated into the songs Jeff writes are scripture references. And in the Web site (www.waves.ca) where a list of Jeff’s songs can be found under ‘RadioWaves,’ (www.waves.ca/radio) the scripture references are Internet hyperlinks. Some songs even have links to devotionals, bible dictionary definitions and animations, making each song an interactive bible study.
